A fundraiser has been launched to help save the Newark Boys Chorus School, which is facing financial difficulties. As of Friday, June 30, more than $21,000 has been raised. The campaign, which began last month, is close to hitting its goal, the school said. The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey said they are matching donations made during June.

The tuition free school was founded in 1969 and educates boys in grades 3 to 8. The chorus has performed on six continents and at venues like Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the White House.

"The Newark Boys Chorus School has had a profound impact on its students and the community," the school wrote on the fundraising page. "It is a testament to the power of the arts in education - the school has opened doors to a future filled with possibilities for thousands of young men. The school provides encouragement and opportunities that they would never be given anywhere else."

Donors expressed their hope that the Newark Boys Chorus School is able to stay open.

"I have had a strong admiration for the Newark Boy's Chorus for several decades and for the lifetime impact that the organization has had in the lives of thousands of young men of color during its existence," said one donor. "I feel certain that this fine institution will exceed its current and future goals."
